Extra Credit Opportunities

 

 

Extra Credit is only collected two times a year; once toward the end of each semester.  You have a choice of which option to complete.  Remember, this is an optional experience (as the name extra credit should imply), however, you should not squander this opportunity.

Second Semester

Accepted until May 7, 2010

You may choose only one option each semester to earn Up to 50 points

 

1. Dossier on Scientist <-- click on hyperlink for info.

2. Make a Science Related Game

These games should be something you make not buy.  I'm looking for creativity and original thought.  The object is to learn science content by playing your game.  Games should accurately and successfully reinforce content studied in our class during first semester.

Choose either card game or board game:

3.  Build a Working 3-D Model

Model must be made large enough to use as a demonstration and should be related to something in your textbook.  Model must be presented to class and it must come with complete review of your creative process, materials used,  and how to duplicate.    Building materials may include wood, Styrofoam, plastic, etc. Label all parts.

Examples (but not limited to):

4. Create a "Beginners Informational Guide" for:

bulletSalt water or fresh water aquariums from start to finish
bulletInclude photos, sketches, and complete instructions
bulletHow-to pointers for successful tanks
bulletBasics on water chemistry
bulletProper filters and lighting
bulletCompatible species (plant and animal)
bulletTitle page and works cited in APA format
bulletPresent neatly in a 3-ring binder or any multimedia format
bulletif digital format chosen, you must copy your work to disk/flash drive and give to me along with hard copy to receive full credit

5.  Collect & Prepare an Insect Collection

bulletCollect and label at least 12 insects
bulletMount on foam board or suitable surface with straight pins (You may use the protocol from Mrs. King to assemble collection)
bulletProper mounting of insects
bulletLabels must include
bulletGenus and species
bulletState, County found
bulletCity, Location
bulletDate, Time of day collected

6. Jeopardy Game

bulletUse this template and create a jeopardy game based on content from chapters we are currently studying.
bulletGame must function properly and be at a high school honor's level
bulletCredit given based on quality and accuracy of content
bulletInclude directions for your game
bulletMust be submitted on flash drive or disk
bullet OpenOffice free download (use if you don't have Microsoft Office)
bulletFree html text editor for making web pages

7. Scientific Research Report

5 page typed report on any scientist or science related topic, i.e.. biology, biochemistry, ecology, herpetology, medical, etc.  

bullet

Use your own words- plagiarism will cause your paper to be rejected.  It's okay to use someone's exact words if you quote them, "____________" and cite source.

Example:

This methodology stands in agreement with Stewart et al. who states, “A science education should do more than instruct students with respect to         the conclusions reached by scientists…science education should encourage students to develop both understandings about science as an intellectual      activity and understandings of the products of science” (1992).

Report must contain works cited page. (follow APA format) Use works cited/references in alphabetical order, examples found on the "writing reports" page of this website.                           

Sample entry based on example above:

Stewart, J., Hafner, R., Johnson, S., & Finkel, E. (1992).  Science as model building: computers and high-school genetics.  Educational  Psychologist, 27(3), 317–336.

Typed, Double spaced, 1 inch margins, times new roman font.  Proof read and use spell check prior to printing.

Follow APA format (title page, abstract, 5 pages of content, works cited)  Pictures do not count toward the 5 pages of content!

Rubric will be used to grade paper.

bulletPrinter Ink (HP Deskjet F4240) counts as 10 pts.
