  The Scientific Method

graphical flowchart of the scientific method from NASA Kids

Modern science deals only with physical quantities, which we can express in quantitative rather than qualitative terms.

The scientific method begins with careful observations of some phenomenon,

followed by a hypothesis, which tries to explain the observations.

Scientists then test the hypothesis through experimentation.  If the hypothesis correctly predicts the results of the experiments and it is general enough  to correctly predict behavior not previously observed it may be accepted as theory.

A theory with an extremely wide range of proven validity and application is called a physical law.
